Shadow Mountain Gallery in Evergreen
The foothills west of Denver have been a haven for creative souls for decades, and Shadow Mountain Gallery has been a destination for art lovers coming to the mountains looking to discover the finest creations by local artists. Now celebrating its 28th year, this artists-owned gallery in downtown Evergreen, CO is a treasure trove of fine art and fine crafts, featuring fused & stained glass, decorative & functional ceramics, wood, jewelry, gourd art, sculptural leather, photography, mixed media and paintings in watercolor, oil, resin and other unique artforms.
If you’ve ever wondered what drives an artist’s passion to work in a specific medium, stop in the gallery any day of the week and talk to the artists at SMG. As artist owners, each of the gallery’s 30 artists treat the gallery as an annex to their own studios, allowing for an ever-changing showcase of affordable gifts, home furnishing and personal adornments. And because SMG artists take turns staffing the gallery, visitors are always in for a treat as artists freely share stories about what inspired an eye-catching work of art or a series of special pieces.
Walking in the door of Shadow Mountain Gallery, one is struck by the variety of creativity. SMG hosts a lively calendar of seasonal theme shows designed to challenge gallery artists to capture and express the beauty and bounty of Colorado. The gallery blossoms during the “Springtime in the Mountains” showcase. It thunders during the Evergreen Rodeo with a “Western Art” exhibit and sings on warm summer days when artists capture the joyful sight of mountain “Hummingbirds & Friends” in their chosen medium. Every fall when hundreds of visitors flock to the mountains to view the Aspens changing colors, the gallery’s glorious “Aspen Showcase” treats visitors to a wealth of colors, textures, shapes and imagery that helps art lovers savor the season.
In November and December the gallery explodes with “Holiday Treasures,” a special showcase that challenges gallery artists to let loose their creative spirit, broaden the scope of their normal work and even step outside their regular media. It results in an expanded selection of truly one-of-a- kind handmade ornaments, wearable art, home furnishings and holiday gifts.
Spend some time in this gallery and you’ll discover that the Artists here are a special group. You’ll find the creations of numerous highly acclaimed award winning artists with national reputations and local talent, each encouraging and supporting the other’s creative muse and offering the public insight into how an artist views the world around them. Keeping an artist’s run consignment gallery operational for 28 years without relying on grants & donations like most non-profit arts organizations takes teamwork and effort. Some of the gallery artists have been part of the team since 1991. Others who are new to displaying their work in a gallery environment are mentored to help nurture a professional approach to exhibiting and marketing their art in Evergreen.
The gallery has high standards for the pieces on display. Prospective artists must submit work to a jury of their peers, have a unique identifiable style, a high degree of technical skill, promise to only exhibit their best work in the gallery and make a commitment to play an active role helping the gallery thrive. Only a few, select artists are accepted in to the gallery each year and there’s a waiting list for available display space.
Whatever the season and whatever the reason, when visitors and area residents find themselves near downtown Evergreen, a visit to Shadow Mountain Gallery is always worthwhile.
